Apply for WIC (food and nutrition help for families with young children)
Provided by: Wake County Public Health (WIC) (Wake County)
WIC provides healthy foods, nutrition and breastfeeding support, and referrals for pregnant women, new mothers, babies and children up to age 5. Wake County Public Health runs WIC here.
Ways to do it
What you need
- Proof of income or of another program you’re in (such as Medicaid), and ID. Ask when you apply.
Steps online (phone, tablet or computer)
- Use the USDA pre-screening tool to see if you might qualify.
- Start your application with Wake County’s online form, or call 919-250-4720.
Steps by phone
- On your appointment day, WIC calls you between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (not at a set time).
- They ask about eligibility, diet and health, and you get an eWIC card for buying healthy food.
Good to know
- Who can use it: Infants, children up to age 5, pregnant women and women who recently had a baby. Caretakers, foster parents of children under 5, and families of all types can apply. Income must be under 185% of the federal poverty guidelines, or the family must get help from another qualifying program.
- You can upload documents through the state’s MyNCWIC portal (myncwic.ncdhhs.gov).
- Changes to your Medicaid don’t automatically stop your WIC.
- The online application form is hosted on JotForm, a form service Wake County links to.
